What Does This Calculator Do?

Whether you just got your exam results back or you’re trying to figure out where you stand across multiple subjects, converting raw marks into a meaningful percentage shouldn’t require a calculator app and some mental math. This Marks Percentage Calculator does it all for you in seconds — and it comes in two modes depending on how detailed you want to get.

The Simple Calculator is exactly what it sounds like. You enter the marks you scored and the total marks the exam was out of, hit calculate, and instantly get your percentage, your letter grade, and whether you passed or failed. Clean, fast, and no fuss.

The Subject-wise Calculator is where things get more useful for students juggling multiple subjects. You add each subject one by one — entering the subject name, the marks you got, and the total marks available — and the calculator builds a full table showing you the percentage and grade for every individual subject. At the bottom, it gives you your overall combined percentage, your total marks across all subjects, an overall grade, and your pass/fail status. You can delete any subject from the table if you made an error, reset everything to start fresh, or save your results to the browser so you can come back to them later.

Both modes display results with color-coded feedback, making it immediately clear whether your performance is excellent, good, average, or needs improvement — without having to interpret the numbers yourself.

The Formula Behind It

The percentage calculation used by this tool is the most fundamental formula in academic scoring:

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100

So if you scored 450 out of 500, the calculation is: (450 ÷ 500) × 100 = 90%

For the subject-wise mode, the overall percentage is calculated by combining all subjects together rather than averaging the individual subject percentages — which is the correct approach:

Overall Percentage = (Sum of All Marks Obtained ÷ Sum of All Total Marks) × 100

For example, if you scored 85 out of 100 in Math, 78 out of 100 in English, and 92 out of 100 in Science, the correct overall percentage is: (85 + 78 + 92) ÷ (100 + 100 + 100) × 100 = 255 ÷ 300 × 100 = 85% — not a simple average of 85, 78, and 92, which would give a slightly different and less accurate number.

Once the percentage is calculated, the tool automatically assigns a letter grade based on standard grading thresholds:

  • A+ — 90% and above
  • A — 80% to 89%
  • B — 70% to 79%
  • C — 60% to 69%
  • D — 50% to 59%
  • F — Below 50% (Fail)

How to Use It

For the Simple Calculator:

  1. Select the Simple Calculator tab
  2. Enter your total scored marks (e.g., 450)
  3. Enter the maximum possible marks (e.g., 500)
  4. Click Calculate Percentage
  5. View your percentage, letter grade, and pass/fail status instantly

For the Subject-wise Calculator:

  1. Select the Subject-wise Calculator tab
  2. Enter the subject name (e.g., Mathematics)
  3. Enter the marks you obtained (e.g., 85)
  4. Enter the total marks for that subject (e.g., 100)
  5. Click Add Subject — it appears in the table below
  6. Repeat for every subject you want to include
  7. View the individual percentages and grades per subject, plus the overall result at the bottom
  8. Use the trash icon to remove any subject, Reset All to start over, or Save Results to keep your data

Why It’s Worth Using

Calculating percentages by hand is straightforward enough for a single subject, but once you’re dealing with five or six subjects with different total marks, it becomes easy to make errors or lose track. This tool handles all of it accurately and presents the results in a clear, organized way that’s actually useful — not just a raw percentage but a grade and a pass/fail status alongside it.

It’s also great for students preparing academic transcripts, checking eligibility for scholarships or programs that have minimum percentage requirements, or simply keeping track of performance across the semester. The subject-wise mode in particular gives you a proper breakdown that mirrors how results are typically presented on report cards and transcripts, making it easy to understand and share.

Completely free, no sign-up required, works instantly, and your subject data can be saved right in the browser for whenever you need to come back to it.
