What Does This Calculator Do?

Not all assignments count equally — and that’s exactly why a simple average of your scores can give you a completely misleading picture of where you actually stand in a course. A homework assignment worth 5% and a final exam worth 40% should never be treated the same way, yet that’s exactly what a regular average does. This Weighted Grade Calculator fixes that by factoring in both what you scored and how much each component actually counts, giving you one accurate, honest final grade that truly reflects your performance in the course.

You can add as many assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, or labs as you need. Give each one a custom name, enter the score you received, and specify what percentage of the overall course grade it carries. The calculator updates your final grade in real time as you add each entry, so you always have a live running total. It also includes a colorful bar chart that lets you visually see how each component compares, making it easy to spot at a glance which areas pulled your grade up and which ones dragged it down. If your total weights don’t add up to 100%, the tool immediately flags a warning so you can catch and correct any errors before trusting the result.

When you’re done, you can export your full grade breakdown as a clean, single-page PDF — useful for keeping personal records, sharing with a professor, or discussing your standing with an academic advisor.

The Formula Behind It

The calculator uses the standard weighted average formula used in academic grading worldwide:

Final Grade = Σ (Assignment Score × Assignment Weight) ÷ Σ (Total Weights)

In plain terms, here’s what that means: for each assignment, you multiply your score by its weight percentage. You then add all of those results together and divide by the sum of all the weights. When your weights add up to exactly 100%, the division step doesn’t change much — but it becomes critically important when weights are missing or don’t sum to 100, because without it you’d get an inflated or deflated result.

For example, imagine you have three components:

  • Homework: scored 90%, worth 20% of the course
  • Midterm: scored 75%, worth 30% of the course
  • Final Exam: scored 85%, worth 50% of the course

The calculation would be: (90 × 20) + (75 × 30) + (85 × 50) = 1800 + 2250 + 4250 = 8300. Divide that by 100 (the total weight) and your final grade is 83.00%.

One important safeguard: if the sum of all weights equals zero — which would cause a division by zero error — the calculator automatically sets the final grade to 0 rather than crashing or returning an incorrect value.

How to Use It

Adding your grades takes just a few seconds per entry:

  1. Enter the assignment name — for example, Midterm Exam, Lab Report, or Homework 1
  2. Enter your score as a percentage — for example, 88
  3. Enter the weight of that assignment as a percentage — for example, 25
  4. Click Add or press Enter — your result updates instantly
  5. Repeat for every graded component in your course
  6. Review your weighted final grade and the bar chart below
  7. Export to PDF if you want to save or print your full breakdown

Why It’s Worth Using

A lot of students are genuinely surprised when their final grade doesn’t match what they expected — and it almost always comes down to treating every assignment as if it counted equally when it didn’t. A 95 on a quiz worth 5% barely moves the needle, while a 65 on a final exam worth 40% can drag your whole grade down significantly. This calculator makes all of that visible and clear, so there are no surprises.

It’s also a great planning tool mid-semester. You can use it to see exactly where you stand before your remaining assignments are graded, helping you understand which upcoming components you need to prioritize most. Whether you’re trying to protect a strong grade or claw back from a rough start, knowing your real weighted standing gives you the information you need to make smarter decisions about your time and effort.

It’s completely free, works instantly, requires no login, and handles as many assignments as your course throws at you.
